Background:
L Lawliet, who usually goes by "L" is the world's best detective and is often asked by the governments of various countries to help solve difficult crimes. He also sometimes goes under the names, Erald Coil and Danuve, who are known as the 2nd and 3rd best detectives in the world.
He grew up in an orphanage for gifted children, Wammy House, in the care of Watari. He has also lived in England for five years, during which he was the England Junior Cup Tennis Champion.
L has been asked to investigate and capture Kira. He is able to quickly deduce that Light is Kira, and that he needs to know a person's name and face before he can kill, but L is unable to find any concrete evidence against him.
In order to further investigate Light, he enrolls in same university as Light and becomes his classmate, under the pseudonym Hideki Ryuga, which is also the name of a famous idol. This makes Light unable to kill him as Light would think of the idol while writing the name "Hideki Ryuga" and would kill the popstar instead of L. The popstar's sudden death would then cause L to suspect Light more.
L later invites Light to join his investigation team. Within his team, he is referred to as Ryuzaki.
Though he is still unable to find evidence of Light's guilt, he does manage to find physical evidence that Misa is the 2nd Kira. He captures Misa and tries to force a confession out of her. Misa's shinigami, Rem, threatens to kill Light if anything should happen to the girl so Light confronts L and asks to be imprisoned to prove that he isn't Kira. During his imprisonment, Light gives up ownership of the Death Note and loses all memory of it. In the meantime, a 3rd Kira has started killing. L is eventually forced to release both Light and Misa though he still suspects Light.
By working together, L and Light manage to capture the 3rd Kira, Higuchi, and find out about the Death Note. However, the moment Light touches the notebook, he regains all his memories and manipulates Rem into killing L by making her believe that it's the only way she can save Misa.
Just before L dies in Light's arms, Light smiles down at him and confirms that L has been right all along in thinking he is Kira.
Personality:
L often appears disheveled and unkempt, with dark circles under his eyes. Unlike his appearance, he's extremely intelligent and analytical (he even thinks in percentages) and has great powers of deduction and insight. He is surprisingly good at tennis. He has quite a strong sense of justice but is willing to use any means (even questionable ones) to solve any crime. He has a number of quirks such as crouching in a chair rather than sitting, eating only sweet foods like desserts and fruits and holding items very delicately.
